The 16-bit skins are generated from templates and backgrounds available for
download from:

http://www.palmgear.com/software/showsoftware.cfm?prodid=67668
or:
http://www.palmgear.com/software/showsoftware.cfm?prodid=67669

There you will also find scripts for generating them.

The skins use icons derived from one or more of the following
sources, and modified by Alexander R. Pruss in July-August, 2004,
with modifications copyright (c) 2004 Alexander R. Pruss:
  - Bob Eaton's icons in two of his skins, used by permission.
  - Robert O'Connor's HOME and MENU icons in the Plucker Project
    (www.plkr.org), copyright 2003 Robert O'Connor (GPL, plkr.org)
  - Carles Carbonell Bernado's "Noia for KDE 1.00" icons (LGPL,
    kde-look.org), copyright (c) 2003 (maybe also 2004) by
    Carles Bernado
  - Michael Doches's "Amaranth, Altheae .5" icons
    (LGPL, kde-look.org), copyright (c) 2003 (I assume) and maybe
2002 and 2004 by Michael Doches

There are several kinds of skins, distinguished by their filenames and which
archive they are contained in.

For the UX:
All skins are graffiti skins. Some are extended and some are
standard, as marked by an "ext-" or lack thereof in the filename.

For the NX/NZ/TH/NR:
There are two basic kinds of graffiti skins: Capitalizer skins mark the upper
right corner of the numeric area for use with Capitalizer's auto-punctuation
facilities. (handypalmstuff.sf.net) These are marked by a "-Cap" in the
filename. Non-capitalizer skins are what most users will want. Again, some
skins are extended and some standard, as marked by an "ext-" in the filename.
All the graffiti skins are in OS5 format. This means that on the NR, they can
only be loaded using a utility that converts skins, such as Clie Skinner
  (www.prussfamily.us/skinner.html).

Statusbar skins are available in NX/NZ/TH flavors and in NR specific flavors.
  All statusbar skins are "standard".

In general, extended skins can be loaded only by a specialized utility, such as
Clie Skinner (http://www.palmgear.com/software/showsoftware.cfm?prodid=67667).
Standard skins should be loadable by any compatible skin loader such as the
free NXSkinnerQuick for OS5 units (handypalmstuff.sf.net). All statusbar skins
are standard.

The format for extended skins is that if the abmp 0x03e8 Graffiti resource
exceeds 65000 bytes, it is split between an abmp 0x03e8 resource and a
2bmp 0x03e8 resource. The split must happen within the bitmap area of
the 16-bit bitmap (not in a header, and not in a 4-bit area) for the skin
to load correctly via Clie Skinner on an NR model unit.
